I think nothing on an extreme is the best option. A balance between them, perhaps is better.
Having said that, I very much dislike being asked, 'how are you?'.Not because it's "small talk" but because it's such a vague question.
I either prefer utter nonsense or to stay in the deep. And it's an inconvenient thing.
I'm not natural with small talk. But I still use it in everyday life because it allows the formation of an initial bond with people to help start a conversation. I'm not saying that people are shallow, but that people would prefer moving from small talk to the greater one than being attacked with the big talk in the first place. I'd put it this way, that perhaps it feels like a natural grace of things.
